PTR Patch 4.3: Priest Buffs and Druid Nerfs

Patch notes for 4.3 have just been released on the PTR. Keep in mind that these changes are in no way PERMANENT at this time, so keep an open mind with these. Druids and Priests have had some tweaks although Priests much more than Druids.
Druid (Forums / Talent Calculator / Skills/Talents)

  • Wrath has a new spell effect.

Restoration

  • Wild Growth healing has been reduced by 20%.

Glyphs

  • Glyph of Shred has been renamed Glyph of Bloodletting, and now also causes Mangle (Cat) to extend the duration of Rip, in addition to its existing Shred functionality.
  • Glyph of Wild Growth now also increases the cooldown on Wild Growth by 2 seconds.

Wild Growth healing has been reduced by 20%- Let me just say right now, this was needed. Wild Growth is too powerful. It consistently makes up about 35-40%+ of a Druid’s healing on most encounters. One spell doing that much healing? It was clearly over-tuned. Wild Growth was initially buffed because Druids lacked any type of burst healing capability. However, Druids do pretty well without having access to burst healing spells like Chain Heal and Prayer of Healing. This will help bring Druids back in line throughput-wise.

Glyph of Wild Growth now also increases the cooldown on Wild Growth by 2 seconds- Interesting change. Increase the number by 1 but take an additional 2 second cooldown? That’s gonna be a tough call. We’ll see how it goes.

Now for Priests!

Priest (Forums / Talent Calculator / Skills/Talents)

  • Divine Hymn now affects 5 targets, up from 3.

Discipline

  • Atonement will now account for the target enemy’s combat reach when calculating proper range, enabling it to be used on large creatures such as Ragnaros and Ala’kir.
  • Divine Aegis has a new spell effect.

Holy

  • Spirit of Redemption has been rebuilt to address a few functionality issues and make it more responsive. Spirit of Redemption otherwise remains unchanged.
  • State of Mind has been redesigned and is now called Heavenly Voice. Heavenly Voice increases the healing done by Divine Hymn by 50/100%, and reduces the cooldown of Divine Hymn by 2.5/5 minutes.

Glyphs

  • Glyph of Circle of Healing now also increases the mana cost of Circle of Healing by 20%.

Divine Hymn affects 5 targets, up from 3- Nice change. They buffed Divine Hymn to be on par with Tranquility with the number of people it affects.

Atonement will now account for the target enemy’s combat reach when calculating proper range, enabling it to be used on large creatures such as Ragnaros and Ala’kir- Can I get a hallelujah?! This is a fantastic change to Atonement Priests everywhere. Now we will see what the difference will be between Smite spamming vs PoH spamming for raid healing!

Divine Aegis has a new spell effect- Good. It will be really nice to tell the difference between DA and Power Word: Shield again.

Spirit of Redemption has been rebuilt to address a few functionality issues and make it more responsive. Spirit of Redemption otherwise remains unchanged- Looks like they are just fixing some bugs with the talent, nothing groundbreaking. We’ll see, but I probably will still leave this talent out of my build.

State of Mind has been redesigned and is now called Heavenly Voice. Heavenly Voice increases the healing done by Divine Hymn by 50/100%, and reduces the cooldown of Divine Hymn by 2.5/5 minutes- NICE. While I wasn’t an advocate for a Divine Hymn buff for Holy, it’s better than nothing at all. Divine Hymn now basically mirrors Tranquility with the exception of the spell effects. I’d say Divine Hymn might even be slightly more powerful due to its +10% increased healing effect. Nonetheless, Holy now has an effective raid wall to contribute. It was a much needed change.

Glyph of Circle of Healing now also increases the mana cost of Circle of Healing by 20%- This is an interesting change. Healing 1 extra person for a 20% increase in mana cost? I’m not so sure the glyph will be worth it anymore. CoH doesn’t exactly pad the meters like some other AoE spells do. It looks attractive for 25s but I’ll bet 10-man priests will think twice.

Another change that wasn’t listed in the official patch notes, but it was stated on the Devs Blog: Holy Word: Sanctuary had it’s mana cost reduced- We aren’t sure to what extent. It could be 10% or 20%. Whatever the number is it’s much needed for a spell that was considered lackluster for the cost.

What are your thoughts on the changes for 4.3?

  1. Hmm, will be interesting to see the maths for the reworked Glyph of Wild Growth if the change goes through. I imagine the Glyph will work better in a 25-men than in a 10-men.

    1. Ya I’m not 100% sure with the math. I think it might vary by encounter. We won’t know if the 2 second interval will “make or break” an encounter. I’m sure 25man Druids will probably take it, but 10man Druids will probably stay away.

  2. Maybe finally my numbers will be closer or maye better than our Druid healer. Nothing against her but now I won’t be getting belittled by the raid lead for healing :)

    1. WG needed the nerf. Like I already stated, it heals for WAY TOO MUCH for a fire-and-forget spell. Especially when you compare it with it’s cousin Circle of Healing. My Wild Growth will heal for 150k over it’s duration. My Circle of Healing on my Priest was lucky to hit for 60k.
It will certainly be interesting to see how this affects Druid throughput for 4.3. If it damages Druids greatly, I’m sure Blizz will give them something else to compensate.
