PTR 4.3: Tranquility vs. Divine Hymn

There has been a ton of talk about how the new and improved Divine Hymn stacks up against Tranquility in the healing community. I figured this post was needed so everyone has an idea of how powerful both abilities are against one another.

In the left corner, weighing in at 180 pounds, used by Druids everywhere, give it up for TRANQUILITY!

And in the right corner, weighing in at 210 pounds (he recently gained weight for Patch 4.3) and is now loved by Holy Priests everywhere, let’s hear it for DIVINE HYMN!

The Math

The math between the 2 spells is somewhat simple. I won’t get into specific numbers, but I’m gonna do some rounding just to make the numbers a bit easier to understand. We’ll take into consideration that both spells have enough Haste to get their 5th tick for their duration.

Tranquility- Heals 5 nearby lowest health party or raid targets within 40 yards with Tranquility every 2 sec for 8 sec.

Tranquility heals for 7887 plus an additional 1008 every 2 sec over 8 sec. Stacks up to 3 times. The Druid must channel to maintain the spell.

I went ahead and got a snapshot of a recent 25man Majordomo Staghelm kill, so I have an idea of how much healing Tranquility does in a 25-man raid. This is fully-raid buffed.

Ticks= 5 4

Tranquility total= 428k*

*This is while NOT in Treeform. This number includes the Harmony buff.

Side Note Update- Jasyla was nice enough to point out that Tranquility direct heals DO NOT scale from Haste, just the leftover HoT. Thanks Jasyla!

Divine Hymn

Divine Hymn is a bit harder to figure out due to not having logs with the new buff. Lets take a look at how much healing the new Divine Hymn does compared to the old one.

On Live- Heals 3 nearby lowest health friendly party or raid targets within 40 yards for 10017 every 2 sec for 8 sec, and increases healing done to them by 10% for 8 sec. Maximum of 12 heals. The Priest must channel to maintain the spell.

Ticks= 5

Divine Hymn total= (10017*3)*5= 150k*

*This is not including raid buffs. Expect it to be slightly more. This is also in Chakra: Sanctuary. This also doesn’t include Echo of Light, which tacks on an additional HoT.

PTR- Heals 5 nearby lowest health friendly party or raid targets within 40 yards for 19430 every 2 sec for 8 sec, and increases healing done to them by 10% for 8 sec. Maximum of 20 heals. The Priest must channel to maintain the spell.

Ticks= 5

Divine Hymn total= (19430*5)*5= 486k*

*This is not including raid buffs. Expect it to be slightly more. This is also in Chakra: Sanctuary. This also doesn’t include Echo of Light, which tacks on an additional HoT.

Also, this does not take into consideration the 10% healing buff that Divine Hymn provides. The healing from Divine Hymn scales off it’s own buff, so if it ticks on the same person twice the healing will increase. This causes the healing capabilities of Divine Hymn to vary depending on health bars and raid size. 10-man raids will find DH ticking on the same people more than once, increasing it’s value.

Update- I did some research and my own testing to make sure that DH DOES in fact scale with Haste, increasing the ticks past the “20 max” threshold. This is a bug that has been on live for quite some time and continues to be bugged on the PTR. I don’t know whether Blizzard will fix it in the future or not. So what does this all mean?

It means that currently on the PTR, the new and improved Divine Hymn outshines Tranquility from a numbers perspective, but Druids shouldn’t worry:

  1. Spell Coefficient- I’m not quite sure how well the new DH scales with spellpower. For all we know Tranquility may surpass it in high end T13 content.
  2. Druids should love DH too- Druids will see great benefit from DH just like every other healer. Now that Priests will bring DH back onto their bars, every other healer will likely see a small buff in their own HpS.
  3. Ultimate HpS combo- Tranquility and Divine Hymn have a great synergy together. It makes for an ultimate raid wall rivaling the Barrier/SLT combo that many Disc Priests and Shaman use.

Overall, a buffed Divine Hymn affects every healer and finally makes Holy Priests contribute in raid utility once again. I’m gonna end this post with a picture of a cat bent on destroying the world.

    I possibly wasn’t as eloquent as I would have liked on Twitter last night (140 character limit is a bugger at times :D )

    I think that this DH buff is a good thing and that the holy priest is getting some much needed love atm (as we druids did earlier in the expansion). From my PoV this is a good thing, as my priest is holy/disc and I much prefer playing holy to disc (disc just feels….. meh).

    As you say, this change will increase HPS for all healers in the raid with a holy priest as well as making DH + Tranq an awesome combo for either very heavy raid wide damage or extended periods (chaining DH followed by tranq to benefit from the buff). It would be nice if I had a holy priest in my raid for the extra utility – 1 resto druid + 2 resto shammies means that we have limited utility compared to a more varied healer make up.

    It is nice to see that holy is getting a buff, as this gives greater utility and survivability to the raid group as a whole, which is never a bad thing. I just hope these changes (to all the healing classes) don’t have a negative effect on the way druid healing works or is viewed. It would be terrible to suddenly become a less that competitive raid healer (I accept that we are already not competitive tank healers, that’s np).

    Just to clarify my position of druids vs holy/disc/paladins etc – my opinion wasn’t that DH or Holy priests were OP and druids were broken :) I think druids are good where they are (maybe a little tweaking) and that some other classes maybe need some love here and there. I just worry that other healers sometimes look at druids HPS and simply see numbers bigger than their own (so obviously druids are OP ^^) and complain without realising why we have big numbers (generalisation, not directed at you :) ). In turn, Blizzard try to balance all the healer numbers so they are all outputting equally, which then means druids are actually at a disadvantage due to lack of absorbs etc.

    TL:DR – holy priests (and other healers) getting buffed/tweaked is good, I just hope other classes getting buffed while druids get nerfed isn’t the start of a downward spiral for my poor resto druid :)

  2. What’s the CD on Divine Hymn? If it’s longer than 3 minutes then I won’t feel so bad about those stinkin’ priests stealing my one cool spell that Blizzard left me with after they ripped my branches off.

  3. In 4.2, divine hymn should be on the same 3 minute cooldown as tranquility.

    1. I mean in 4.3 (the next patch).

    2. Then I’m pretty concerned. The WG nerf is supposedly because resto druids have too high an HPS. But Tranquility is part of that. Give Holy Priests Tranquility, nerf WG, and don’t give Resto druids the tools Holy Priests have and we’re not in a very good spot. If they don’t just want us to Rejuv spam, I’m really not sure what they’re trying to do here.

  4. Did you actually cast Divine Hymn on the PTR and see how much it heals per tick? Or are you just taking the numbers from the tooltip?

    (Also, Tranquility does not get a 5th big tick from haste, only the small HoT it leaves is gets more ticks from haste)

    1. I did cast DH on the ptr. It’s healing was actually more due to the 10% buff it leaves. I was under the impression that Tranquility and DH scaled the same way with haste so the duration could reach a fifth tick if you hit the breakpoint.

  5. The Divine Hymn tool tip says: “Maximum of 20 heals.” so unfortunately, there’s no 5th ticks on this spell.
    Divine Hymn total= (19430*5)*4= 389k*
    If we consider the mastery will improve this spell for 10%, we have the same amount for both spells.

    1. DH has been bugged for a while where that rule is ignored with enough haste. I verified on the PTR.

  6. Seems like it will become an excellent tool, especially if your raid comp consists of a holy priest. I won’t feel so bad now that my Hpally will crap himself when there’s huge aoe dmg inc. I’ll leave it to the priest and drood =D
